Tools, Techniques and Strategies for Instant Change

State Change

This strategy is to be used when you need to change your whole state.

It could be your  state of mind, or it could be your state of
body.  Both are intimately connected.  If you are having
difficulty with how you are feeling, or are stuck in a bad
feeling, it helps to change your physical state, and the mental will follow.

Most people who are feeling depressed will sit in a slumped position, with their head bowed down, , breathing shallow breaths.  How different is this from an upright position , head held high, shoulders back, body straight, and breathing deep full breaths?

Just by changing the physicality of your body, the
mental/emotional body will follow.

Have you ever experience something disgusting, seen something
nasty, or revolting, and your go uuughhh! and give you whole
body a shudder?  This is a natural way to "shake off" the
emotional jolt.  By "shaking" or "shuttering", or moving your
body quickly in any whole body fashion that is different from
the moment before, you can shift the emotional state that you
were feeling the moment before.  It is sort of a clearing
mechanism for the mind.

The body holds and stores emotions physically.  Tense shoulders, arms, legs, torso, neck, all these places can hold on to
tension and "lock" it up.   Moving these parts of your body
deliberately will loosen up the stagnate energy, and
naturally flowing energy will calm the nerves, and raise the
spirits.

In order to change your state, you need to move each part of
your body by doing something different, if only for a moment.

However, if done systematically, and deliberately, the
effect is magnified.

To loosen the head and neck area, look up.  Look at the
ceiling, look at the top corners of the room, or check out
the ceiling lights,.  If you are near a window, check out the
sky or the clouds.

To loosen up the arm area, pick something up.  (probably not
your coffee cup, as you have been doing that all along
haven't you) something different, perhaps something heavier-
a couple of books, perhaps, or a picture frame.  Hold it
up high, if you can do so without feeling too silly, to get
the whole arm involved.

To loosen up the chest area, just twist around, look behind
you, twist the other way, get up and bend down to "pick
something up" from the floor.  That's all it takes.

In order to loosen the leg area, get up and take a short walk,
walk over to a window, or to the restroom, or around the
office, or your house.  Going up a few steps is a remarkable
way to loosen up this area.

At the same time, remember to think of something pleasant.

Think of some lovely scene you'd like to be enjoying, or
a pleasant memory of your last vacation-  any pleasant
thought will do.  This gives your mind a break from whatever
was stressing you out before, and allows the new energy to
flow  faster.

Putting it all together.

Changing your state in ONE MINUTE could look something like
this-

For example, if you are in your office:

You realize you are in a miserable mood, and you wish to
change it.  So you take a deep breath, while sitting up
very straight and holding your head high.

  You stand up,

and give your body a quick shudder, then you choose a
pleasant thought to dwell on for a while, perhaps that
beach you'll be sunning on next month.

  You reach down

and  pick up a book, or folder, raising it momentarily
above your head, then you turn around and walk out of
the office, carrying the folder.

 You walk over to a

window and check out the weather, being sure to look
up as high as you can to the sky..  Twist around to look
behind you, while your feet are still facing the window,
and then, still breathing deeply,  walk over to the
stairwell and walk halfway down a floor, then back up.
(Imagine you're climbing a sand dune).

 As you go back

to your office, you bend down, as if you were picking
up a stray paperclip off the floor.

That's it! You have loosened up all the "locked" zones in  your body that were holding tension, and you've cleared
out the stagnant energy, and are now flowing more clearly and
energetically.

I guarantee, that when you sit back down at your desk, you
will be feeling different-  better, more energized, probably
much more inspired, and able to work more efficiently.

All it took was one minute!

Of course, you can adjust the actions to suit wherever you
are, and whatever you're doing.  The basic idea is to move
each area of the body, breath deeply, and focus for a
moment on some other, (and much more pleasant) thoughts.
