Energy
Breath
One of the simplest and most powerful resources we have is often
overlooked. When your energy is low, all it takes to get a boost, is to
breath.
Breathing is
natural, and we'll do it always, but there are ways to move your
breath in and out that can definitely give us a different effect than,
say, just sitting there, slumped over, taking shallow quick breaths.
Research show us that when you are stressed, less air reaches your
lungs. This is because when you are stressed, you tend to
take shorter, shallower breaths, and therefore, intake less
oxygen.
Your whole body thrives on oxygen, and less of it means less function
for your muscles, for your organs, for your brain. Less oxygen in
the brain means less abitlity to think. This is one of the
reasons we tend to make faulty decisions under stress. We just
aren't thinking clearly.
This, of course makes it harder to remember what to do, but here is a
thought to put in your head to remember every time you find yourself in
a stressful situaltion..... Just
Breathe!!
Standing
still and breathing will do three things for you:
- It will disrupt whatever stressful cycle you
may be caught in,
- It will give you a moment to think, and if you
begin to focus on breathing deeply,
- It will allow you to think more clearly, so
that the next step you take may be more useful.
All three of these will automatically reduce the level of stress.
How handy is that?
A Breathing Exercise
Now, if you have time, you might want to take a few minutes to breath
more consciously. The benefits of this can be amazing. Not
only does it de-stress your day, but it re-energizes each and every
cell in your body, making you feel stronger, have more stamina, and be
more relaxed as you tackle those daily tasks.
Try this:
Sit still, somewhere comfortable, preferably quiet. You don't
have to lie down, but if you are sitting up, keep both feet on the
floor, and your spine as straight as possible.
Relax all the muscles of the body. ( this would be a good time to think
through the Oaken Bucket, once
you learn that).
Take a deep breath, and exhale it all completely. Really
completely. It's amazing how much air is still left in the lungs
when we think we're done. Give it one more little push to get all
the air out - we don't want any stale air lying around, do we?
Then, inhale slowly and consciously through your nose. This would
be a good time to imagine you are in-taking wonderful stuff that you'd
like to increase in your life: love, health, energy, abundance,
harmony, peace,- you know what you want. Breath it in, and feel
it spread throughout your whole body, saturating every cell.
Now, exhale through your mouth, slowly and consciously. If you
like, you can imagine getting rid of negative things in your life, (
fear, anger, resentment, impatience, etc.) as it gently whooshes out of
your mouth, and away, away from your life.
REPEAT. Just focus on your slow, deep breathing for
5-10 breaths.
If you were to do this 3 or 4 times a day, you would be astounded at
the difference it makes in your health, your energy, and your peace of
mind!
Remember- When you find yourself getting stressed, relief is as
simple as focusing on you breathing!
One more thought:
As an alternative to breathing in the good, and breathing out the bad,
you may want instead, to use an affirmation.
(If you don't know what affirmations are, or would like some
suggestions, go to Affirmations,
in the Gentle Change site.)
Here is a sample that you might think to yourself as your focus on your
breathing:
With each breath I become more
centered.
With each breath I am stronger, healthier, and more at peace.
Naturally, it is way more powerful if you make up your own, as only you
know what it is you truely need for your own growth and healing.

truly intense, feeling so strongly that your own emotions are nearly
