Introduction to
Affirmations
We all use affirmations all the time. There are thoughts flowing
through our minds endlessly, all day long. Most of the time
we are totally unaware of these thoughts. And, if our lives are
not going as we wish, you can be sure these thoughts are not ones that
are useful or helpful, or letting us progress as we'd
like.
We say things to ourselves like, "What a stupid mistake." or "I'll
never be able to do this." etc. These are affirmations.
They just are not positive ones.
As we become aware of what we are thinking, we can consciously
substitute "good" affirmations for the "bad" ones that are holding us
back.
It's a simple process. Whenever you notice a negative thought
(that you are thinking, ) simply let it go, and replace it with a
positive thought, that would be more useful to you.
In this way, you can slowly train your mind, that you'd rather be
thinking something different.
In addition, it is often helpful to find a time each day to consciously
sit down, and repeat positive phrases and affirmations over and over
again, letting them sink into you subconsious mind. It is sort of
like recording over an old tape track (remember cassette tapes?, ok
maybe not) anyway, the more often you can see, hear, or say the
new affirmations, the faster they will take hold in your life.
IMPORTANT NOTE
Affirmations must be in a particular format in order to work best for
you.
1- They must be in the PRESENT TENSE.
Your mind does not experience time. In your mind, it is always
NOW. If you are asking for a raise tomorrow,
well, think about it. Tomorrow is always in the
future. It's like the sign I saw in a pub once- "FREE BEER ALL
DAY TOMORROW!" Quite exciting, eh? but they never had
to give out any beer, because "tomorrow" never came.
So make all your affirmations in the present tense, even if it is
contrary to your present "reality".
For example:
I have a wonderful new job.
I am enjoying the perfect relationship.
I am driving a new convertable.
ETC.
This is the way to create in your mind the reatlity that your mind will
then create in your outer world.
2- Use only positive words. Since your mind uses images and
pictures to understand, and there are no "Negative" pictures, you must
only use positive statements. Most people do not understand that
if you use a phrase with a negative word in it, the mind "beeps out"
the negative, and then you are affirming exactly the opposite of what
you want.
For instance, if you tell yourself, "I never forget my keys."
What your mind hears is "I forget my keys." Not exactly the
plan, is it?
This can be tricky at times, but it is very critical to state
your desires in a totally positive way.
For example "I don't lose my temper at work." would be
better stated as "I remain calm and in control at all times." See
the differernce?
You can write down your own affirmations, and repeat them to yourself,
or record them, and listen to it. Or, you can use affirmations
that others have written, if they apply to your situation.
We have gathered here some affirmations, for different things, and we
will be adding to them on a regular basis.
If you have a list of affirmations that you'd like to share, just drop me a line, and I'll be glad
to add them to the list!
Good luck!
